The Dirty Dozen and Bottom of the Barrel: Time for The Wacky Races

Unless you are of a certain age, you probably have never heard of the "Wacky Races"....

Though admittedly I only know them from reruns which ran when I was a very, very young and still learning "Sports Nerd"...

But the races---though likely a bit on the non-politically correct/offensive side these days in some way encapsulate the College Football season.

Only this season (2018), we already have a pretty darn good idea who is going to win....

The other reason this is your theme of the week is easy, conference play is in full swing, most teams have already beaten their designated cupcakes and now we find out who will be worthy of a "Shot at the Belt"....

And yeah, if you watched the embedded video---I can so, so easily picture Nick Saban as Dick Dastardly...although Saban does actually win...(but that's another story)....

So...about last week. You might be impressed to know that I went 15-0. Yup, that's right. Picked a winner in every single game. (Though I don't pick spreads or over/under)....

The undefeated mark puts me at 26-3 just two weeks into my season. (No poll should start until Week 3 which is why that's when mine starts)....

Think about it kids. You want to know who is going to win, stick with your boy, I got ya.....

But alas, it's on to the important stuff

THE DIRTY DOZEN:

1. Alabama 5-0: Three little letters sum up the 2018 Crimson Tide.....T-U-A....yeah, the kid is good. Really, really good. And so are the Tide. And at the end of the day---tell 'em Naitch....

And as the man says---"That ain't happening".....

This Week: at Arkansas; My Pick: Alabama 43, Arkansas 13

2. Ohio State 5-0: Damn you Urban Meyer for finding Dwayne Haskins. And playing in the mostly "Meh" Big 10. Though admittedly the Buckeyes barely escaped 110,000 white clad maniacs in Happy Valley last week.

This Week: vs. Indiana; My Pick: Ohio State 47, Indiana 24

3. Notre Dame 5-0: What, no UGA you say. The Irish, to this point, have been more impressive getting better each week and taking a huge leap with QB Ian Book running things. The schedule hasn't been a cake walk early but gets much, much easier after this week...

This Week: at Virginia Tech; My Pick: Notre Dame 31, Va. Tech 27

4. Georgia 5-0: Folks, the Georgia Bulldogs would be a top team in any conference. But...some Line Injuries have taken a bit of a toll and the Dawgs have been a bit sloppy thus far this season. Get past LSU in a couple weeks, and it's cruise control time kids...

This Week: vs. Vanderbilt; My Pick: UGA 41, Vandy 21

5. LSU 5-0: Anyone think the Bayou Bengals would be here 5 weeks in to the season? Anyone? Sure, there are still a few questions on Offense and nobody thinks highly of Coach O's coaching abilities, but almost all their tough games are at home and that should scare almost everyone...

This Week: at Florida; My Pick: LSU 27, Florida 23

6. Clemson 5-0: I apparently am the only one not impressed by the Tigers so far? Or who think the QB issues are going to bite them before 2018 ends? For all the bluster, Trevor Lawrence wasn't exactly lighting Syracuse up before getting hurt last week. Just sayin'....

This Week: at Wake Forest; My Pick: Clemson 31, Wake Forest 27

7. Oklahoma 5-0: The Sooners are what the Sooners are, not much different than they've been over the past 5-years. Amazing offense, meh defense. But better than anyone else in the Big 12. Which pretty much describes them in 2018.

This Week: vs. Texas; My Pick: Texas 37, Oklahoma 36 UPSET SPECIAL!!!

8. West Virginia 4-0: Wait! What? West By-God-Virginia in the Top 10? Yeah, you read that right. The Mountaineers their own selves. You might be surprised to know this is one pretty good football team. If you haven't watched QB Will Grier play---you should....

This Week: vs. Kansas (haha); My Pick: W.Virginia 49, Kansas 17

9. UCF 4-0: UCF! UCF! UCF! So friends, we need to talk. You might not agree with the level of competition the Knights play. You might not think they'd stand up to say SEC or Big 10 play. But you gotta love the 16 game winning streak. Yes, that's right, UCF hasn't lost since 2016. And may not lose this season either...

This Week: vs. SMU; My Pick: UCF 43, SMU 21

10. Kentucky 5-0: Okay Phil, now you've lost your mind. Um, no voice inside my head, I haven't. One hellaciously good defense and Benny Snell at RB means the Wildcats can grind out wins with the best of them. Don't sleep on this team, Nov. 3rd vs. UGA is gonna be a slobberknocker....

This Week: at Texas A&M; My Pick: Kentucky 23, A&M 21

11. Penn State 4-1: Tough loss last week by the Nittany Lions. For all the heat James Franklin took for his late 4th down call, there's no guarantee had PSU converted, they'd have done anything with it. Just sayin'...

This Week: vs. Michigan State; My Pick: Penn State 27, Michigan St. 21

12. Washington 4-1: No love for the West Coast I tell ya, nothing. Not every team out there is bad. Heck a couple can compete. The Huskies darn near knocked off Auburn in Week 1 after traveling across the country. They've played better each week.

This Week: at UCLA (haha); My Pick: Washington 47, UCLA 10

THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL

We again have some changing teams on our list. Teams come and teams go...but the Barrel lives on forever!!

The fun part of this--we get to put a couple of fairly well known programs on this list. Because, well, um, they just really are bad football teams and aren't likely to get better the next couple of weeks....

5. UConn 1-4: Nope, the return of formerly successful Head Coach Randy Edsall has not exactly gone as planned. Statistically this is the WORST defensive team in the FCS. 130th out of 130. They give up over 660 yards a game and well over 50 points. Folks, that is hard to do....

This Week: at Memphis; My Pick: Memphis 51, UConn 13

4. San Jose St 0-4: Ooof, the Spartans nearly won last week. Hawaii beat them 44-41 and yes, a win would have got them off this list. But alas, fate dealt San Jose a mighty blow and they land on our list of America's Worst teams for yet another week....

This Week: vs. Colorado State; My Pick: Colorado St. 37, San Jose St 31

3. UTEP 0-5: The Miners, give them credit, are fighting to get off our list. Two straight close losses mean they're on the cusp of escaping. But alas, there is no escape from Stalag 13....(damn! the clip isn't available on YouTube)....

This Week: vs. North Texas; My Pick: North Texas 41, UTEP 21

2. UCLA 0-4: Oh boy, the Fighting Chip Kelly's are bad. Really, really bad. Seriously, like they won't be favored in any game the rest of 2018 bad. Yeah, sure, they're young and have very few Chip Kelly type players. But man...this is brutal...

This Week: vs. Washington; My Pick: See #12 of the Dozen

1. Nebraska 0-4: Congratulations Nebraska fans, your fall from grace is complete. You are the chosen ones. It's quite possible Coach Scott Frost could go from coaching an undefeated team one season to a winless one the next. Mind you, there's some potential talent here, but as of now it hasn't begun to show itself. At all.

This Week: at Wisconsin; My Pick: Wisconsin 31, Nebraska 23
