Cha Ching: Grizzlies Coach Goes off on Referees During Playoff Loss (UPDATED)
It's very rare to hear a coach in a professional sports league to go off publicly on referees. They may vaguely allude to problems or questions with calls or penalties and the like but rarely to they go into a 2-minute rant.
Memphis Grizzlies Head Coach David Fizdale did not hold back Monday night after his team lost to the San Antonio Spurs 96-82 in Game 2 of their Best of 7 series.
Fizdale's complaint was pretty simple as he was angry his team only shot half as many free throws as the Spurs despite nearly doubling San Antonio in "Shots in the Paint". Those shots often result in foul calls.
The focus of his rant was a statistic that showed Spurs star Kawhi Leonard got more free throw attempts during the game (19) than Fizdale's entire team.
The Grizzlies coach continued harping on the disparity in free throw attempts and then added this, using his star Point Guard Mike Conley as an example:
“It’s unfortunate that I got a guy like who in whole career has zero technical fouls. He just cannot seem to get the proper respect from the officials that he deserves. We don’t get the respect that these guys deserve because Mike Conley doesn’t go crazy. He has class, and he just plays the game, but I’m not gonna let them treat us that way. I know Pop has pedigree and I’m a young rookie but they’re not gonna ‘rook’ us. That’s unacceptable that was unprofessional. My guys dug in that game and earned to be in that game but they did not even give us a chance. Take that for data.”
Yes, he finished the statement with "Take that for Data"...which now will become the NBA Internet Meme of the Day....
If you are interested in what Fizdale said in it's entirety...well, here ya go...
Yes, the heavily favored Spurs now hold a 2-0 lead in the series. Game 3 is slated for Thursday night in Memphis.
WEDNESDAY AM UPDATE: yep... Fizdale got fined $30,000
