Bowl Season is now called Bowl Season?

Was it not always called this?/Bowl Season

The team that brought you the "College Football Playoff" comes the "Bowl Season"?

Sorry, I can't resist the temptation to make jokes here after the "Football Bowl Association" renamed itself "Bowl Season".

Yeah, that's right, it's a "branding" thing created or thought up by a marketing firm. Which I guess in the 21st century is a thing that groups do. Right?

I mean heck, they came up with a logo and name for the 44 games played after the regular season ends and the brilliantly marketed and named "College Football Playoff" is played. Yes, College Football's championship playoff is called the College Football Playoff (don't ask)....

What's funny about this? Ok, it makes me laugh. Ok, really, most of this makes me laugh but I guess that is a me thing, is that a marketing firm got paid a ton of money to come up with all of this.

It also makes me wonder what were the other "Branding" options?

--ESPN Money Making season

--Bad Blazer season and the longer version, "Old Men" in Bad Blazer season

--Best Buy gift bag season

--Games only a few attend

--Made for TV Sports Programming season

--Games that don't matter to anyone but the fans base

--Distractions at the in-laws house

--Games future draft picks don't play in

(I'm sure there are a half-zillion more, if you read this--whaddya got?)

Even in a regular year, where are you going to find some 80 teams worthy of playing in a December bowl game? Oh, wait, it's a reward, right?

Listen, I'm no genius when it comes to branding things. Though I never proclaimed to be one and certainly never got paid like one.

I'm the genius who when tasked to come up with the name of a series of sports shows for the TV station I was working at in the 2000's, came up with such original titles as: "The CBS 46 Sunday Sports Special" and "The SEC Show".

Yes, really. Those were the names of actual shows I produced and launched. I will say (modestly) that the Sports Special won an award from the Associated Press for Best Sports Show in Georgia back in 2006.

Yeah, I know, I shouldn't be making fun of things other people come up with, though I'm pretty certain in this era of snarky social media, I'm not the only one doing it.

I will give these folks credit for trying something, anything to advance interest in their games. For all the criticism I give them (a lot--read my past work), they are still a tradition for many schools who will never, EVER have the opportunity to play in the College Football Playoff.

The CFP appears to be a game for some combination of Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Oklahoma and Ohio State with an occasional opportunity for the LSU's or Oregon's of the world. It's not a playoff for the other 120 or so of the 130 teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

But hey, one can be hopeful, right?
