The Dirty Dozen and Bottom of the Barrel: Big Bucks and no Whammy's

Press Your Luck: The first week in November is when we will separate the Contenders from the Pretenders in College Football?

It's a big week for the "Big Boys", particularly in the SEC where we will find out who likely will be in the Conference Championship game and claim at least one of the College Football Playoff berths...

Chose wrong---and your looking at a late December bowl game.....wah wah....

But alas, College Football....she's a finicky game and often comes with unexpected twists and turns. Sure we have a pretty good idea who three of the College Football Playoff teams are....

Or do we?

But enough mystery....it's time to talk about how smart I am....

7-3 on a week where a frightening amount of teams were off for the week. It also makes me 65-14 on the season....which ain't too shabby....

And yes, this is an all-time classic from a great show many of you may never have seen. Second City T.V....take a minute and look this up....

Alas it's time for Monster Chiller Horror Theater....a.k.a....

THE DIRTY DOZEN

1. Alabama 8-0: Can anyone stop the Crazy Train? The only team to hold the Tide to under 40 points...Missouri (39)...this is a scary good offense. And with a week to rest up before their biggest game of the season---on the road. Yikes! We always like to see LSU play at Home at Night...but

This Week: at LSU; My Pick: Alabama 39, LSU 23

2. Clemson 8-0: Yup, the Tigers are right where most of us thought they'd be and are getting better each week. Nobody in the ACC is even in the same ballpark with them in 2018. Certainly not the fighting Bobby Petrino's....

This Week: vs. Louisville; My Pick: Clemson 56, Louisville 17

3. Notre Dame 8-0: A.K.A the best of the rest (maybe?). The Irish have just done whatever is necessary to win. They haven't dominated too often, but the little things do matter. They'll be favored from here out--but a few traps do lay in their path...

This Week: at Northwestern; My Pick: Notre Dame 31, Northwestern 27

4. Michigan 7-1: This pick my rankle some of you SEC folks---though I don't really care about that. Until you find a better defense, the Wolverines are the pick here. The offense has improved too, which should scare the rest of the Big 10/14/23

This Week: vs. Penn State; My Pick: Michigan 27, Penn State 23

5. Oklahoma 7-1: Two weeks a big difference makes for the Sooners. Solid defensive performance vs. K-State. Keep it up and they may slip into playoff contention again. And really--who the heck can stop the offense?

This Week: at Texas Tech; My Pick: Oklahoma 47, Texas Tech 33

6. LSU 7-1: Yeah, I know...they should be ranked higher according to you. Beating Auburn doesn't look so spectacular anymore. Neither does losing to Florida. Catching a sleepwalking UGA didn't hurt, but I'm still not convinced they're Top 5 material...unless they win this week....

This Week: SEE #1

7. UCF 7-0: Wait, what about UGA? Welp, I'm not sold on the Bulldogs and to be honest--UCF would score...a lot--against pretty much any SEC team this season. A little bonus for the 20 straight wins...which should count for more than it does in the biased College Football rankings....

This Week: vs. Temple: My Pick: UCF 43, Temple 31

8. Georgia 7-1: The Dawgs did rebound nicely vs. Florida but some flaws continue to show. The run defense is mediocre at best and not scoring on 7-plays from the 2-yard line is a BIG problem. This team is not as good as the 2017 version---though there is room for improvement...

This Week: at Kentucky; My Pick: UGA 27, Kentucky 17

9. Ohio State 7-1: Love Dwayne Haskins, hate Urban Meyer. The Buckeyes are not without flaw either, the defense is much like Oklahoma's and arguably worse. Lots of questions about where this teams head is at and that will come back to haunt them...

This Week: vs. Nebraska; My Pick: Ohio State 53, Nebraska 37

10. Washington State 7-1: Yup, the Fighting Leach's are the Best of the West. And while always fun to watch, they are horribly unbalanced, which makes the vulnerable. Somehow statistically they are 129th in running offense per game and 1st in passing. Which only will get you so far...

This Week: vs. California; My Pick: Washington State 43, California 35

11. West Virginia 6-1: So there's a chance. A small chance the Mountaineers could still impact the Playoff. Win out and it's Oklahoma for Game 12 and possibly the next week in the Big 12 title game. Weird, right? The path ain't easy...I"m just not sold they are capable...as of right now...

This Week: at Texas; My Pick: West Virginia 35, Texas 23

12** Georgia Southern 7-1: Yeah, the 'ol alma mater. We probably aren't the 12th best team in the U.S this season, but bouncing back from last years 2-10 season, winning and then beating #25 Appalachian State is a nice accomplishment...We just don't have the depth of the "Big Boys"...

This Week: at Louisiana-Monroe; My Pick: Ga. Southern 37, La. Monroe 21

Also in the mix: Kentucky 7-1, Utah 6-2, Houston 7-1....

THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL

Congratulations to San Jose State who gets voted off the island thanks to a win over UNLV this past weekend.

Our other competitors weren't so lucky and shockingly only one team (UTEP) remains winless. I may secretly be hoping Louisville ends up winning this title, but with two wins I can't rank them as the worst of the worst----yet....

5. Louisville 2-6: As I said last week, Karma can be a bitch and wreak havoc from time to time. And maybe---just maybe she's caught up to Mr. Robert Petrino esq. It would only be appropriate. However The Cardinals are stuck with Mr. Petrino as the stupid contract extension they gave him has come back to haunt Louisville...

This Week: SEE CLEMSON (yikes!!!)

4. Rice 1-8: Pity poor Rice. Lament the loss of Snap, Krackle and Pop as this is one bad football team with little going in their favor. Yes, they've won a game--but it was against Prarie View. So does it really matter? No....

This Week: **#ToiletBowl Matchup...vs. UTEP; My Pick: UTEP 17, Rice 13 UPSET!!!

3. Rutgers 1-7: Yes, I might take some joy in putting two "Power 5" teams in the Bottom 5. Because again....that whole Karma thing. The Scarlet Knights are truly an awful team having not scored more than 17 points in any game this season....

This Week: at Wisconsin; My Pick: Wisconsin 31, Rutgers 17

2. UConn 1-7: Welp, the Huskies have at least kept the past couple games close. Heck, UMass only beat them by 5 last week. They still are a train wreck though it appears UConn is at least showing some signs of a pulse...

This Week: at Tulsa; My Pick: Tulsa 24, UConn 23

1. UTEP 0-8: And then there is perennial Barrel contender the UTEP Miners---or Minors depending on your perspective I guess. Heck, the defense is almost respectable, but the offense has been downright offensive as their QB's have barely completed half their passes this season...

This Week: See #4 (Rice)

Also in consideration: Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Kent State (MAC Action!!), Tulsa, Western Kentucky and North Carolina......

And with that I bid you adieu....and leave you with a music recommendation. The Lovely Bride and I saw these guys play live this past weekend. They are fantastic. Some great bluesy/rock music done very, very well....

Your welcome for the suggestion:
