How is DJ Durkin Allowed to Return to Maryland as Head Coach?

Ok...I don't know D.J. Durkin, have never met him, never seen him coach or try to "Lead" young men to learn the strength of acting as a team and be there to support each other...

But I've kept abreast of the investigation surrounding Durkin, Maryland Athletic Director Damon Evans and Terrapin Football program and after the 192 page report am STUNNED the two men will be returning to their jobs.

Yeah, the Maryland "Board of Regents" decided both have met the "Terms of Punishment" for their mistakes. And while there is nothing wrong with "Second Chances", this one is just plain mind-boggling....

The Board repeatedly cited Durkin's lack of Head Coaching experience and knowledge on how to maintain his team and his lack of supervision of now former Strength Coach Rick Court was a mistake. It appears Court, who was already let go, is now made the scapegoat in the death of former Terrapin Offensive Lineman Jordan McNair back in June.

The immediate thought is this: How do you justify keeping Durkin as a Head Coach when you just admitted he wasn't prepared to do it? For starters, he's not exactly the second coming of Nick Saban....but the Board of Regents just basically brushed off all the admitted problems Durkin created in his own program by saying..."He's committed to reforms"....

WTF!!!

Listen---I know College Football is largely a heartless, soul-less business that now exists primarily to make money. But....

The Maryland program hasn't suffered with interim Head Coach Matt Canada at the helm in 2018. The Terrapins are 5-3 under Canada and have shown some spark on occasion. Why go back to Durkin who appears to have alienated a frighteningly large amount of his players, several of whom walked out of today's meeting with him....

Why would you reinstate a guy who's documented lack of oversight aided in the death of one of his players? How do you justify it on ANY level?

There is NOTHING good that is or will come of the decision as Maryland is getting laughed at (and rightfully so) for the decision.

Yeah, maybe they'd owe Durkin some money, so what? Yes, I know Maryland, much like Rutgers is hemorrhaging money after spurning the ACC for the Big 10 a few years ago (they're not eligible for TV money yet)...

This is going to do nothing to enhance their image. Every single coach in America recruiting against the Terrapins are going to use the McNair incident against them and they should.

And yeah, again, I know it's a business--but there is NOTHING that screams the Board needed to do this.

(I'm not even getting into Evans--who I do actually know and think is basically a decent guy...though a questionable Administrator)

Shame on you Maryland Board of Regents, you should be embarrassed for making this half-assed, clearly not well thought out decision.

You just made yourselves a national punchline and reinforced everything wrong about College Football....

But hey, you still have your bright, shiny new coach who you said wasn't prepared for the job---he's all yours....

((ed.note: Yes, I know University of Maryland President Wallace Loh is falling on his sword as he did not agree with the decision, though he signed off on it....#Politics))

Here's the announcement....which references dysfunction---yet returned the people responsible for it.....to their respective jobs.....smh....
